Hamster in its habitat.

During the hottest months, it’s important to prioritize temperature regulation, proper lighting, and humidity control for our slithery, scaly, furry, and feathery friends. In this blog, our team at Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital shares a few ideas for exotic pet habitat setup plus other ways to ensure the health and comfort of your exotic pets this summer.

Exotic Pet Habitat Setup: Creating the Ideal Environment

Summer is the perfect time to give your exotic pet’s habitat a “glow-up” that mimics its natural environment. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Summer Terrarium Care: Turn your lizard, frog, or snake’s habitat into a tropical paradise with plants, branches, and moss to replicate a rainforest.
  • Bird Cages: Start with a deep clean and add summer-themed items like a birdbath and perches made of natural materials.
  • Desert Terrariums: Arrange rocks, sand, and cactus to mimic arid landscapes for pets such as bearded dragons and desert tortoises.
  • Aquatic Habitats: Integrate water features like ponds or pools with aquatic plants for pets like turtles and aquatic frogs.

Proper Humidity and Temperature for Reptiles and Other Exotics

Careful attention must be given to humidity and temperature for reptiles and other exotic pets all year long. Thoroughly research your pet’s specific needs or contact our team for help. Consider the following:

  • Humidity Levels: Maintain appropriate humidity levels for your pet’s species. Use humidifiers or misting systems if appropriate and monitor with a hygrometer.
  • Temperature Regulation: Use heat lamps, heating pads, and thermostats to maintain optimal temperatures, ensuring a gradient from warmer to cooler areas within the habitat.
  • Cooling Measures: Implement cooling techniques such as ice packs or cool water baths during extreme heat to prevent overheating.
  • Proper Lighting: Some reptiles need UVB lighting to metabolize calcium properly.
  • Natural Light: Provide access to natural light during the day, but ensure the pet has shade available. Use artificial lights to supplement natural light or provide a 24-hour cycle if necessary.
  • Substrate: Choose a substrate that can help regulate humidity levels.

General Care Recommendations for Exotic Pets

  • Ensure adequate airflow to prevent overheating and maintain fresh air.
  • Provide shaded areas within the habitat to protect pets from direct sunlight. Reposition the habitat or bird cage if needed.
  • Regularly mist the habitat or use water dishes to keep pets hydrated.
  • Ensure the enclosure is large enough to allow your pet to move around and explore.
  • Provide toys, branches, and other enrichment items to stimulate natural behaviors.
  • Use only pet-safe, non-toxic materials.
  • Provide access to fresh, clean water at all times.
  • Supervise your pet when it’s outside of its enclosure, especially during summer when they may be more active.
  • Maintain a clean habitat by regularly cleaning and disinfecting all components.
